How Many Putters Have You Owned?

Every golfer has at least one putter story.
Some of us have one trusty flatstick that has survived multiple sets.
Others have a basement that looks like a putter museum.

Inside the Life At The Turn community, that simple question turned into a full confession booth in the thread

How Many Putters Have You Owned?

It started with a straightforward prompt from JP_Pivot.

“Can you name them all?”

And from there, the lists started rolling in.

The poll: from “1” to “collector”

Before the stories came out, the thread set the tone with a quick poll inside
How Many Putters Have You Owned?

Options were simple.

  • 1
  • 1 to 5
  • 5 to 10
  • Collector

It did not take long before several members self identified as being much closer to “collector” than they had probably admitted to their families.

JP_Pivot: from White Hot to LAB DF3

The thread host, JP_Pivot, kicked things off with a list that shows the full journey from early mallets to modern tech.

“White Hot 2-Ball
Ping Doc17 Center shaft (half a dinner plate)
SC Futura
SC Futura 6m
LAB DF2.1
Jailbird CB
LAB DF3 CB”

The shift into LAB Golf and counterbalanced setups tells you everything about where his putting brain is right now.

Later in the thread he added a line that probably speaks for half the community.

“I should have added another line to the poll called ‘My wife wants to kill me’”

DBK: “off the top of my head 15”

Some people knew the number instantly.

DBK just knew it was a lot.

“This is scary to think about. Stay tuned for upcoming list.

But off the top of my head 15”

Once he got home and started writing, the list did not disappoint.

“1 standard blade from box set
2 Tommy Armour Mallet
3 PING Tyne 4
4 PING Ketch
5 PING Fetch
6 Nike Method Mod 009
7 Nike Method BF something
8 Odyssey Stroke lab 7
9 RUNNER OG
10 T Squared blade
11 LAB Link Accra
12 LAB Link TPT
13 LAB Mezz Max Accra
14 LAB OZ1i
15 What was that french company started with an A?”

The answer came a bit later from bryan.

“It was Argolf.”

After getting some praise from CF _ The Golf Guy, DBK summed it up nicely.

“I feel it is very incomplete with several good brands missing”

That is peak putter person logic.

Papa 3 Putts: bullseye beginnings and a Scotty finish

Papa 3 Putts has gone from absolute classics to modern milled.

“Titleist Bullseye
Wilson Augusta
MacGregor Response
Wilson 8802
Odyssey Dual Force 660
Odyssey Stroke Lab Double Wide
Odyssey Dual Force Rossie II (still own)
Odyssey White Steel 2-Ball SRT (still own)
Scotty Cameron Super Select Newport 2.5+ (still own)”

This is a perfect snapshot of how putting equipment has evolved.

Blades, heel shafted classics, early Odyssey tech, and then a modern Scotty.

CF _ The Golf Guy: “Oops, maybe I do have a problem”

When a low single digit handicap says “in the last 6 years” and then starts listing, you know it is going to be good.

CF _ The Golf Guy delivered.

“Odyssey Exo 7 / Stability
Scotty Cameron Phantom X11 / Stability
Odyssey white hot Rossey / stroke lab
Mizuno M craft
Evnroll tour stroke / Stability tour
L.A.B. DF3 / TPT
L.A.B. Oz.1i / Gears
Louisville Calamity Jane putter (hickory)
MacGregor Yardsmore putter (hickory)
Ted Ray Seventy Two putter (hickory)
Otey Crisman putter (hickory)
Titleist Bullseye putter (classics set)”

Then the self awareness hit.

“Oops, maybe I do have a problem. The DF3 remains in the bag and my wife ‘claimed’ the Oz.1i, but I still have them all, although my son ‘borrowed’ the Scotty Cameron. I’m still searching for my go to hickory putter.”

Modern LAB, premium shafts, and then a full dive into hickory. That is not a problem. That is a lifestyle.

Patrick Dawes: full on collector mode

Some members gave highlights instead of a complete count.
Patrick Dawes is very much in that “if I see something cool under 50, I take it home” category.

His list included:

  • Multiple Scotty Camerons
    • “Current – Custom Heavy Newport with BGT Shaft”
    • “Past – Catalina Oil Can (I miss this one), and GOLO 5”
  • A strong LAB section
    • “Current: Oz1I Broom and Custom DF3 both with TPT Shaft”
    • “Past: Link (Steel Shaft and Gears Shaft) and DF3 Steel Shaft”
  • Odyssey classics
    • “Current: Dual Force Rossi 1 (Working on Reacquiring the 2 as well)”
    • “Past: Dual Force Rossi 2, Microhinge face #1, S2s Boomstick Jailbird and Regular Jailbird, Eleven, #7”

Plus Ping, Cleveland, Seemore, Lombardi, Wilson and “lots of older beat up classics.”

His philosophy is simple.

“If I find a fun looking early putter in need of some love for under 50 it is almost guaranteed I will buy it off the used rack”

Later he explained how this plays out at home.

“Mine has learned to simply look at the putters in the basement when she wants something new for one of her hobbies”

Rearviewmirror: from janky starter to “forever putter”

Not everyone had dozens.
Some had a clear path with a strong LAB ending.

Rearviewmirror laid his out in chronological order.

“Some janky set putter could not even tell you brand
Ping Anser
Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Tei3 (1998 post Tiger win)
LAB Link
LAB Mezz.1
LAB DF3 w Accra
LAB Oz.1i
LAB DF3, different alignment mark and reshafted w TPT and weighted heavy”

Then came the line a lot of us have said out loud.

“I think my current putter is my forever putter.”

Time will tell. The thread will probably be there if that changes.

Other highlights from the community

The thread is full of fun snapshots of golfers and their putter histories.

Golfer TJ:

And cksurfdude tucked in a quietly big list.

Odyssey double wide
Cleveland SOFT (something)
Machine Putters Converter (still have it)
EvnRoll ER2
Edel EAS 4.0 – traded for an Axis One, gave that away
EvnRoll ER5 (still have it)
MLA Tour XDream (still have it)
Bettinardi Inovai 6.0 (current main gamer)”

He also confessed that he is not the only one in his household with a putter count.

“Well my wife has also gone through a few putters, which is completely my fault and I own it”

The “golf gear and marriage” dynamic

One of the best parts of the thread is how often putter counts are tied to relationships.

From JP_Pivot.

“I should have added another line to the poll called ‘My wife wants to kill me’”

To this follow up.

“Yeah. I try to get mine a new pair of running shoes anytime I start getting the golf equipment itch.”

And Patrick’s system of balance.

“Mine has learned to simply look at the putters in the basement when she wants something new for one of her hobbies”

It is a very honest look at how golf gear, budgets, and relationships intersect.

What this thread tells us about golfers and putters

Reading through How Many Putters Have You Owned? a few themes pop up again and again.

  • Most golfers have owned more putters than they realize
  • Nostalgia is strong. Many still have their first “real” putter
  • LAB, Scotty Cameron, Odyssey and Ping are everywhere
  • Spouses notice the number of putters, even if they do not know the models
  • Almost nobody actually thinks they are done buying putters

For some, one or two models over decades feels normal.

For others, a list of 10 to 20 putters is just part of the journey.
