Many of us still have some rounds to play, but the fact remains: October is near, colder temperatures are near, and shuttering golf courses are near for many of us.
It’s nearly offseason time.
That means opportunity—not something to dread. Look at the offseason as your chance to improve your golf swing, your game, and your scores. And one of the fastest ways to drive that improvement is to gain more distance.
So let’s talk about how to build some clubhead speed this offseason so that 2027 is the year you finally start hitting those bombs you know you crave.
Clubhead Speed and Your Swing

It might sound odd to lead an article on offseason speed gains with a discussion about your golf swing, but the fact remains that if you want to gain distance, you need an efficient action.
Bad golf swings are slow golf swings.
Priority number one in your pursuit of more clubhead speed should be getting in front of a golf professional and figuring out where you’re dumping or leaking speed in your golf swing. There are plenty of miles per hour to be gained by learning a more effective golf swing.
Perhaps you’re not using the ground effectively. Perhaps there’s not enough of an X-factor stretch in your swing. Perhaps you’re lacking shoulder turn. Maybe there’s not enough lag in your swing. Whatever the case may be, chances are you can make serious gains in clubhead speed through some relatively simple refinements to your golf swing.
The Gym

It’s time to stop avoiding this place.
The best golfers, and the golfers who hit it farthest, are athletes with an athlete’s body. They’re taking care of that athlete’s body accordingly. You need to as well. It’s time to get in the gym and build the platform of strength and power you need to generate more miles per hour. That means weight training with basic compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses, along with plyometric and explosive movements like jumps, med-ball throws, and similar exercises.
If lifting weights and working out isn’t necessarily your thing, that’s fine. That’s the case for many people. But if you’re truly serious about gaining clubhead speed this offseason, the gym is where it has to start (assuming your swing is reasonably squared away).
Building strength and power in the gym is a surefire way to use your offseason downtime to begin 2027 with a whole new capacity to hit the ball much farther than you did this season. There’s also plenty to be said for the overall benefits to your health and injury avoidance.

Speed Sticks

There are outstanding training products available that you can use in the offseason to help you add clubhead speed.
Most notable are the Stack System, SuperSpeed Golf, and the HiiTS Training System. Rypstick and Speed Toad are also worth mentioning.
Now, let’s be clear: speed training devices are the dessert. Getting in the gym and getting your swing dialed in are the entrée.
That’s not because you’re going to injure yourself or anything of that nature. It instead owes to the basic principle that a sound swing and a strong, capable body are the platform for speed. Speed training devices help you build on top of that platform.
That said, these speed training devices are an excellent investment to help you learn to swing with much more intent. They also use overload and underload training—swinging at heavier or lighter weights than your driver—to teach the brain to take the governor off and allow you to rewire your system to generate faster speeds.
They are an excellent means of adding clubhead speed to your game.
Improving your swing, embarking on a solid fitness routine, and investing in speed training aids are three levers available to you this offseason to help you pick up the clubhead speed you’ve been craving. If you didn’t hit the ball as far as you wanted to in 2026, or you want to postpone the inevitable losses of distance that come with aging, then get after it this offseason with vigor.
Longer drives and lower scores await you in 2027.
